Essential Steps to a Healthy Pregnancy

Regular intake of folic acid: Begin or continue to take at least 400 micrograms of folic acid by taking vitamin supplements every day to reduce the child’s risk of neural tube defects. Also, it is difficult to get all the folic acid you need only from food. Most prenatal vitamins contain 400 micrograms of folic acid.
Do not use alcohol, tobacco or drugs in any form: Drinking alcohol, smoking, and taking drugs during pregnancy can increase the child’s risk for problems such as foetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs), sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and other life threatening problems. FASDs have a variety of effects on the foetus which result due to the mother drinking alcohol during pregnancy. Smoking tobacco, smoking marijuana, exposure to second-hand smoke and taking drugs during pregnancy can also harm the foetus and affect infant health.
Talk to your doctor about medications: Most of the women take four or more medications during pregnancy. Talk to your doctor about the prescribed medications and herbal and vitamin supplements. Certain medications and some dietary or herbal supplements can harm the foetus during pregnancy.
Avoid exposure to toxic substances: During pregnancy, exposure to radiation, pesticides, some metals and certain types of chemicals can cause birth defects, premature birth and miscarriage. A few examples of exposures that are known to be toxic to the developing foetus are lead, radiation and solvents.
Follow a healthy diet: Choose different types of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and dairy products to help ensure the developing foetus gets all the nutrients it needs. Make sure you also drink plenty of water. Consult the doctor to learn more about how much you should eat during pregnancy, the nutrients required and how much caffeine is safe to drink.
Eat a safe diet: Avoid certain foods such as raw fish, undercooked meat, deli meat, papaya and unpasteurized cheeses. Do not consume anything which you are not comfortable eating.
Limit caffeine intake: Too much caffeine can increase the risk of miscarriage. Talk to the doctor about the amount of caffeine you get from coffee, tea, or soda. A limit of 200 milligrams per day is advisable.
Talk to the doctor about physical activity:  Most women can continue regular physical activity throughout pregnancy. Regular physical activity will help you feel better physically and mentally, sleep better and prepare your body for birth.
Maintain a healthy weight: Gaining too much or too little weight during pregnancy increases the risk of different problems for both the mother and the infant. Following a healthy diet and getting regular physical exercise can help you stay within the recommended weight. The amount of weight you should gain during pregnancy depends on your pre-pregnancy weight and body mass index (BMI).
